if you’re into skincare, you’ve probably heard of the term “spicules”, or you’ve been introduced to it by friends or through social media. But do you really know anything about it?
What is spicules?
Spicule is a fine structure extracted from the bones of sponges. Individual spicules appear as needles under the microscope, with lengths ranging from 100 μm to 300 μm, and the needles are usually hollow, which are mainly composed of calcium carbonate and silica, and are known by the INCI name: Hydrolyzed Sponge.
What can spicules do?
Experimental data shows that the delivery efficiency of active ingredients via spicules far surpasses that of other technologies.
- Compared to roller microneedles, spicules enhance the delivery of hyaluronic acid by 3000%.
- The absorption rate of siRNA delivered via spicules is 1000 times higher than that through natural absorption.
- For exosome delivery, spicules achieve a delivery capacity of up to 300,000 Dal.
Spicules are also the core ingredient of bio microneedles – the New Gen of microneedling, and it’s a game changer of micorneedling

How spicules work?
An important step in our skincare routine is called “exfoliation”. The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of our epidermal skin, which functions as a barrier against harmful toxins, infections and UV radiation; it also acts as a physical barrier, hindering the absorption of skincare ingredients and medications.
Studies have found that thanks to Spicule’s needle-like structure, it can easily penetrate the stratum corneum and create tens of thousands of nanometer-sized pores through which active ingredients pass through the stratum corneum and enter the deeper layers of the skin to be absorbed by the cells.
spicules are chemically stable and can be combined with active ingredients with different effects, such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or vitamin C. Spicules can be used to precisely match these ingredients to the skin. Spicules delivers the precise ingredients to the deeper layers of the skin to solve skin problems.
Spicules also has a physical exfoliation function, by rubbing on the skin, it can physically exfoliate the skin, removing the excess stratum corneum helps to promote the renewal and regeneration of the skin, in order to improve the condition of dark spots and acne.
Benefits and side effects of spicules skincare product
1.Combining the advantages of medical cosmetology and home care
Spicule skincare is rapidly gaining popularity because it combines the advantages of medical cosmetology and home care. According to experts, this innovative care breaks through the skin’s keratin barrier through a microneedle carrier to achieve dual efficacy: on the one hand, it can simulate microneedling to promote collagen regeneration and cell renewal;
on the other hand, with the help of soluble microneedle technology to significantly increase the penetration rate of the active ingredient, and its clinical-grade formulations to achieve immediate results comparable to professional care, while eliminating the need for tedious appointment processes.
2. Significantly Increase Transdermal Absorption of Active Ingredients
Dr. Eunice Park, Founder of AIREM New York, points out that unlike traditional skincare products, which are limited to 0.1% transdermal absorption of active ingredients, spicules treatments physically penetrate the stratum corneum to allow the active ingredients to reach the dermis, which is the key to improving skin texture and function.
Dermatologist Dr. Reszko further added that some of the cutting-edge products also use biorelease technology – a bioactive coating on the surface that releases the active ingredients over time – a time-delayed penetration mechanism that provides an exponential boost to skincare results.
3.Side effects
The principle of Spicule is to create a large number of micro-channels in the stratum corneum, so the frequent use of high concentrations of Spicule skincare products may disrupt the barrier balance, thereby increasing the risk of skin moisture loss will, triggering inflammation or infection, so we recommend that according to their own skin condition, choose different concentrations of Spicule skincare products, for the Higher concentrations of Spicule skincare products, reduce the frequency of use, as well as good moisturization and sun protection.
What type of skin care products is Spicule suitable for?
1. Essence class
There are many essence classes containing Spicules on the market at present, and they are very popular. These products generally add less spicules as a permeation promoter, and due to the low content of Spicules, they will not negatively affect the skin barrier, and can be used on a daily basis. Used in combination with active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, PDRN or vitamin C, the transdermal absorption rate of the active ingredients of the essence can be significantly enhanced.
2. cream class
In the daily skin care process, cream is also one of the important skin care products, generally divided into moisturizing, whitening and anti-aging and other three major effects, can effectively solve the skin major problems, deep nourishment and protection of the skin, so that the skin is more moisturized and delicate and shiny. However, due to the isolation of the skin barrier, many effective ingredients are difficult to be absorbed, this time if with the bone needle can effectively enhance the transdermal absorption rate of active ingredients.
3. Exfoliating class
There are many exfoliating products on the market, mainly divided into physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation of two categories, spicules as one of the ways of physical exfoliation, can easily achieve the effect of exfoliation, especially for black skin, their stratum corneum is relatively thicker, and need to be more conducive to the exfoliation of the product. Algae Peels Set by SpongillaTech is the best exfoliation product. SpongillaTech’s Algae Peels Set / Spongilla Peels Set is designed for people with thicker cuticles.
